I was most fortunate to be the nephew of "Uncle Gordy" -- my Mom and "Auntie Corkie" (as we always referred to Corrine) were sisters. As my Mom said, Corkie was the beautiful one.... and my Mom was the other one! I knew "Corkie and Gordy" as my favorite aunt and uncle.... and when Gina came along, it only got better! Gina was our only cousin on that side of our family -- and with my sister, Lynn, we three were the center of the universe for our Grandparents and our Mom's..... a great way to grow up.
Uncle Gordy was a delight to share time with -- and hearing his stories of growing up in the Chicago area, and metal working in Waukegan, Illinois, were more than wonderful. His stories make me smile now.... how Gina was named, why he liked racing (boats and cars), and growing up in his family business.
I had to be older to know how to ask questions and listen fully to others' stories ..... but it was worth the wait. I am sad to think I won't get any more of his stories with his great humor, his insights and his gentle irreverence. I can hear his laughter as I type these words now....
Thank you, Uncle Gordy -- for everything. I will miss you a lot!
Fondly --
Nephew "Zip" (Bert Zipperer)
