It's hard to sum up the impact that someone has had on your life, but I know that Walter Kirsch meant a great deal to many people, including me. I always felt supported in my interest in books and reading and a love of language when I thought of Uncle Walt, even though it often seemed that I was the odd duck in my own family for that interest. Walt was always kind and funny and both Aunt Jane and Uncle Walt helped me consider a career in education as a worthy path to follow.
I am so glad that I had a chance to sit with him when we got together with Jane and John's cousins Carol and others last summer. It was also great that both Jane and Walt could join in celebrating my mom and dad's 50th anniversary dinner at the Belgian brewery restaurant a few years ago, and that I could often see you both when I was visiting Florida.
I hope that you are feeling the love and support of all those who have known the two of you over the years.

The last time we saw Walt was at his retirement party, and we know we should be glad that the memories of that day or those from all the many years before are what we see when we think of him. We know Walt and your family have had to have suffered so much with the gradual loss of that man we remember. He was brilliant, creative and had a marvelous sense of humor. We well remember that "wicked" laugh of his and that knowing sparkle in his eye when he knew someone was being a complete fool. The English departments at both high schools are forever changed because of him. Before Walt, it was English I, II, III and IV; afterwards, there was everything to choose from...literature of all sorts not just American and English Lit., creative writing, film, acting, and a well-thought out student-centered writing program. The English Department teachers were all in awe of Walt; we admired him tremendously, loved him for his wit, and were thankful that we taught under his mentorship because he really set us free.
Having taught both of you, Craig and Chris, and having been your friends, we know that all of what your father was lives on in you.
We are so sorry for your loss.
Fran and David
