My Dearest Brother John. I sit here with all the memories of our childhood passing through my mind. The family fishing trips, belly surfing in the Rockaways, Sunset park pool, PS169 after school center, little league baseball, the street games we played, Luther League, sleigh riding, the times we spent fighting. Brooklyn was a great time, and so long ago, but it seems like only yesterday. I cherish those times we spent together, as well as the recent past golfing, fishing, the long weekend in Miami, the week you spent training in Texas. I look back, and realize they just weren't enough. I guess there was just too much happening in our lives. How I looked forward, to our later years, fishing and playing golf more often. But now the memories will have to do. You left us so quickly. I wish I had a chance to say goodbye, and hug you one more time, just like the picture I saw in one of your photo albums. I will miss you, and will love you always, and there will be a time when we will be back together.
Because you left so quickly, I leave the following for others to read. It was an email I received, and has no message behind it, other than for friends to love your families as much as you can when you have the chance to.
Life is too short, and there is never enough time, or a better time than right now.
F A M I L Y
I ran into a stranger as he passed by, 'Oh excuse me please' was my reply.
He said, 'Please excuse me too;
I wasn't watching for you.'
We were very polite, this stranger and I. We went on our way and we said goodbye.
But at home a different story is told, How we treat our loved ones, young and old.
Later that day, cooking the evening meal, My son stood beside me very still.
When I turned, I nearly knocked him down. 'Move out of the way,' I said with a frown.
He walked away, his little heart broken. I didn't realize how harshly I'd spoken.
While I lay awake in bed,
God's still small voice came to me and said,
'While dealing with a stranger,
common courtesy you use,
but the family you love, you seem to abuse.
Go and look on the kitchen floor,
You'll find some flowers there by the door.
Those are the flowers he brought for you. He picked them himself: pink, yellow and blue.
He stood very quietly not to spoil the surprise, you never saw the tears that filled his little eyes.'
By this time, I felt very small,
And now my tears began to fall.
I quietly went and knelt by his bed ; 'Wake up, little one, wake up,' I said.
'Are these the flowers you picked for me?' He smiled, 'I found 'em, out by the tree.
I picked 'em because they're pretty like you. I knew you'd like 'em, especially the blue.'
I said, 'Son, I'm very sorry for the way I acted today;
I shouldn't have yelled at you that way.'
He said, 'Oh, Mom, that's okay.
I love you anyway.'
I said, 'Son, I love you too,
and I do like the flowers, especially the blue.'
FAMILY
Are you aware that if we died tomorrow, the company
that we are working for could easily replace us in
a matter of days.
But the family we left behind will feel the loss
for the rest of their lives.
And come to think of it, we pour ourselves more into work than into our own family, an unwise investment indeed, don't you think?
So what is behind the story?
Do you know what the word FAMILY means?
FAMILY = FATHER AND MOTHER I LOVE YOU

Dear Dee, I was stunned to hear about John's passing. Our Chef pod had a meeting a couple of weeks ago and as only John can do, he was so excited about designing our decorations. I do not believe John ever met a stranger. I always admired the way he complimented people and was sincerely kind in everyday life. I enjoyed John's company and had a lot of good times with him. Last year's Chef was a hoot and John was a big part of the fun. I will miss our Krewe mate. Condolences Tom

I will miss his soothing voice on those difficult days and positive, kind words he always had for me. God blessed me putting John in my life just as he did so many others. John worked for me for almost four years at L-3. He was a dedicated, passionate professional. When he turned up the volume, I believe it was because he saw waste and inefficiency, and he was always looking for ways to improve things. He was a natural leader who truly earned the respect and teamwork of those he worked with. He enjoyed his work and his co-workers, and I could tell he enjoyed his fishing, golfing, motor cycling, and the occasional trip to Las Vegas. I can still see the big smile on his face when he would take our money to place a bet on our behalf, and then assure us he would keep any winnings in a separate pocket to bring back! Actually I did see him bring money back â?? just not to me! I enjoyed knowing John, and I will miss him.
