Was this JJ McCarthy from Rockaway who was a waiter at the Water Club in Manhattan in the 1980s?

To family and friends of Jimmy,
My most sincere condolences on your loss. I was a friend of Jimmy's from the 70's and 80's in Rockaway. He turned me on to Coltrane and so many other things. I am shocked to hear of his death, but happy to hear that he found a partner and had a child. I had not seen or heard from him in years, but will always carry him in my heart.

Although it has been 33 years since I left rockaway, and many newer experiences have filled my life,I feel the loss of Jimmy in a very real way. We spent many summers surviving in different jobs together. He was a good friend and a member of a small fraternity many of whom have posted here before me. He will be remembered as a sincere, honest "Gentleman". I will pray thet he has found all he was searching for, and may rest in peace. My sincere sympathy to his brothers, wife, and daughter.

As the youngest Murphy, Jack Fitzgerald was compelled to hire me that hot summer to work behind the food counter at Fitzie's. My co-workers were Bob Schlump and Jimmy McCarthy. It was the hardest work, a New York scorcher but also the funniest summer and Jimmy and I survived the "Schlump". We debated, sweat, groaned about the kids from Brooklyn. Jimmy drank more "Yahoos" than I have ever seen. Grunt work for sure but we soon became great friends because we made our way through the season and survived! While we travelled different paths in our lives, it is the quality of the time spent that brings a smile to the memory. His light was bright, his laughter hearty and his soul "solid". I am so glad we shared a space and time that was the gift of an everlasting memory. As Jimmy would have wished, "Peace to all!" Please know that he is not gone because, we very much remember him alive....as he brings us back to life in our memories! Sincerely -

I rememnber all the times Jim came down to my beach while I was a lifeguard; and we spent countless hours talking about everything under the sun. I loved those times! Jim; as Brian said; you were a gentlemen's gentleman. Aloha Hui Ho Bruddah

To James' family. Too often we neglect to tell our friends and family how much they meant to us.
Jim, as almost all who learned of his
death last week commented; "was a true gentleman!!" Always had a smile and a nice word for anyone he met. Life remains and will remain a better place because of our friend, brother, Father and Husband.
Peace

I will always remember Jimmy as the kind, considerate gentleman he was.We shared many good times, filled with laughter and adventure, like the time he visited in Hawaii and I took him out in big surf.I will always be grateful to him for the friendship and support he provided my sister Barbara during her illness.
I am sure they are both smiling down on us as they rest in peace.
My condolences to his wife, daughter and his brothers.

The years pass but friends linger. The last time I saw Jimmy was at my late Aunt Sheila Reens 90th Birthday Party at the Harbor Light in 2001, age did not catch up to us then but we caught up on what our lives had experienced from our earlier days hanging out at Fitzies and Magoos poolroom. As much of a gentle person in his earlier years, he never seemed to have a bitter bone in his body,he still exuded a kind and peacful aura about him then. Our condolences go out to his family at this time of loss.
