Obituary of James Pickands III

James Pickands III, Jim Age 90 Born in Euclid, Ohio September 4, 1931 to James II and Cornelia Martin Pickands. Died March 9, 2022 in Clearwater, Florida where he resided. Jim was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved son, James Pickands IV. Jim is survived by his present wife, D Morgan of 31 years and first wife of 26 years, Nancy McCulloch; his very much loved and beautiful, daughter, Holly Pickands McLaughlin and her two children, Macy Lee Anderson and John Mitchell McLaughlin. He is also survived by his step-children Jill Lydia Kahlenberg and Jason Wesley Smith and their children: Nathan, Rachael, Jessica, Mary, Michael, and John Smith; and Ashlyn and Halle Kahlenberg. He is also survived by his siblings and their spouses: Maude and Charles Thompson, Sarah and Richard Dutton, and Martin Pickands and many wonderful nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews, and great-grand nieces and great-grand nephews. Jim was a graduate of Taft, Yale and Columbia Universities. Jim served in the Army S and P unit in Aberdeen Maryland. Jim was Professor Emeritus of Statistics at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He was published and honored for his work related to the Central Limit Theorem and Gaussian Processes. He was a brilliant debater and antagonist who enjoyed professor wrestling and chewing fat with the boys at the Elegance Bakery. Everyone who knew Jim knew his passion for ice cream.
