Claudina Castellanos

Obituary of Claudina Gonzalez Castellanos

Claudina Gonzalez Castellanos

Our cherished mother, Claudina Gonzalez Castellanos, was born on November 6, 1933 to parents Marcelina Silva García and Basiliso Gonzalez Felipe in Cotorro, Cuba, a province of La Habana.  She was stricken with polio at the age 6, but she never let her affliction suppress her or keep her down-spirited.  Claudina was the sixth child of the family of seven children.

In 1953, she met Jose Castellanos and they became engaged soon after.  Jose left to the United States in 1955 and they wed by proxy in July 1958.  But it wasn’t until the following July when they would see each other again when Jose travelled back to Cuba to retrieve his bride.  They began a new life in the Upper West Side of New York City.  The following year, their first daughter Susana was born and years later their second daughter Virginia was born. They were married for 51 years.

Claudina was an excellent seamstress, and she was employed by several designers in New York City’s fashion district as a sample seamstress.  In addition to sewing, she was very talented with arts and crafts.  Her favorite past times were crocheting and painting.  She considered the well-known painter Bob Ross as her “maestro” and she did in fact paint many of his art projects.

In 1995, Claudina and her husband moved to St. Petersburg, Florida where they enjoyed their retirement years with their daughters and their families.  Claudina’s final years were at Mis Abuelos assisted living facility in Tampa, Florida where they wholeheartedly welcomed her, loved her fondly, and provided her with excellent care.

On Thursday, April 14, 2022, Claudina left this earth to be reunited in Heaven with her two greatest loves: her beloved father and her adoring husband.  She was predeceased by her parents, her sisters Celestina and Celina, her brothers Valerio and Bienvenido, and her husband Jose.  She is survived by her brother Cecilio, her sister Cira, her daughter Susana, her daughter and son-in-law Virginia and Robert, and her grandsons Michael and Gregory.  Claudina was a wonderful daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and friend…and we will miss her tremendously.

Please consider a donation in Claudina’s name to Alzheimer's Association, as this organization makes a difference in the lives of those impacted by Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.
